Here is my newest multimedia work: a video story on Christopher Lambry, Jr.
Lambry reflects on historic rise and new responsibilities by Noah Cathey
Newly elected student body president Christopher Lambry Jr. is still processing what he calls one of the most transformative periods of his life, following a whirlwind week that cemented his leadership at Morehouse College.
Lambry, a junior political science major on the pre-law track from Atlanta, was elected the 95th president of the Student Government Association in March after a contentious and highly visible election season. Reflecting on the moment, he described the experience as “one of the most surreal, serendipitous, just unimaginable days of my life.”
The victory, announced March 20, marked what Lambry called a “full circle” moment, inspired by student leaders he had admired since arriving on campus. “It was a day that I had dreamt of since before I even stepped foot on campus,” he said, noting the influence of past student leaders and mentors who helped shape his path.
Despite challenges during the campaign, including disruptions, sanctions and social media tensions, Lambry said his confidence never wavered. “I had grounded myself in the fact that God had opened the door for me,” he said. “And if he had opened that door for me, then it was my responsibility to walk through it.”
Just one day after his election, Lambry reached another milestone: becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.. He described the moment as a collective achievement shared with his line brothers. “It wasn’t my victory alone,” he said. “To do it with 18 other guys, that was just amazing.”
Now balancing multiple leadership roles, Lambry said the transition has brought both affirmation and pressure. “It’s one thing to be described as a leader … but it’s another thing to consider yourself a leader,” he said. “I am a leader among leaders, and that is a huge torch to carry.”
While he said the responsibilities are not stressful, they can be demanding. “The hardest part for me is being present,” Lambry said. “You have to show up to meetings, to events, to everything. But it’s so rewarding, because I always gain something from these experiences.”
Lambry is also an Oprah Winfrey Scholar, a prestigious program supported by media mogul that bears the program name. The program recently brought him face-to-face with Winfrey during a campus visit, an encounter he described as unforgettable.
“We had a 10-minute conversation about books, about leadership,” Lambry said. “She was giving me a lot of good life advice and reaffirming … that I was a leader.” As he steps into his presidency, Lambry acknowledged that the journey has tested both his mental health and personal relationships. “I’ve had to be extremely selfish in the decisions I make for myself,” he said. “I have lost relationships because of it … and I’ve had to learn some pretty difficult lessons.” Still, he remains grounded in faith and purpose. Each day, he said, is an opportunity. “I hate waking up in the morning,” he added with a laugh, “but I’m always thankful because God gave me another day to be present.” With his presidency underway, Lambry said he is focused on carrying forward a vision not just for himself, but for the broader Morehouse community — one rooted in service, leadership and growth.
