2023-2024 ReMARKER NEWSPAPER
St. Mark's School of Texas | Design Director (and Columnist)
Entering into the fall semester of my senior year at St. Mark's, I was granted with the chance to serve in a full-time role on the award-winning ReMarker Newspaper. Redesigning the publication for the 2023-2024 school year, its 70th volume, was my main task. Using my yearbook and magazine experience, I helped reinvent the ways our visual and verbal stories were connected.

RETHINKING PAGE 2
One of the things that Zack Goforth (Editor-in-Chief of The ReMarker) wanted to do was rethink our use of the page inside the cover. Instead of surrendering the page to any section, we crafted our second page into a snapshot of each edition. The Bulletin showcased three prominent articles of that issue and highlighted six additional stories. In addition to condensing that cycle's briefs, we made space for another cherished form of journalism: columns. This 3"x15" box on the left-hand side ultimately transformed into Cathey's Columns which allowed me to continue telling stories that would challenge and change our school community. Our innovation resulted in a trend on scholastic journalism. Not only did volume 71 of this publication adhere to a similar style, but several of the scholastic newspapers adopted a page 2 design model like ours.
Below is a gallery of every page two from the 2024-2025 school year.

COVER DESIGN
Instead of relying solely on art and design like many high school newspapers, we chose to use photojournalism as the driving force of our covers. Whether it was landscapes from the Pecos mountains in New Mexico or intimate portraiture, I relied on great visuals from our outstanding photography team and intentionally minimal font/color play to tell stories for me. Each cover also includes an extended preview of each story, a brief table of contents and a highlight of The ReMarker online and other print publications.
This, the first cover from Vol. 70, showcases the return of a school tradition: the Pecos Wilderness Trip.
